The end of show season, of course, marked the start of the trend debrief, as well as the social media statistics racked up by the brands, but – more importantly – allows us time for more meaningful reflection of the season gone. “I was happy to get to Paris,” said Vogue fashion critic Anders Christian Madsen, “where some of fashion’s most pensive minds came up with a better way of justifying this overwhelmingly glamorous season.”
In terms of Insta-success, it was Anthony Vaccarello’s most recent outing at Saint Laurent – set against a glittering Eiffel Tower below the Trocadéro – that had the most buzz on the social media channel. Second place this season went to Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Dior showing. As the fashion dust settled, Twitter gathered its verdict too, crowing Tommy Hilfiger and Gigi Hadid as the -victors of the season.
Tributes continued to pour in for Si Newhouse, the man who built and ran Condé Nast for half a century, after he passed away last weekend, and on Friday it was confirmed that Hervé L. Leroux, had died at the age of 60. His name and brand –Hervé Léger – were synonymous with the second-skin, bandage dresses which were so popular in the Nineties.
This week also saw the launch of two exciting pop-ups in the UK. In London, A$AP Rocky opened the doors to his AWGE Bodega: a Selfridges pop-up housed in the basement of the London department store, replicating the archetypal New York corner store. Manchester welcomed the first UK appearance Hermès‘s now famous (and infinitely Instagramable) Hermèsmatic; a retro-style launderette – complete with orange washing machines, washing powder boxes emblazoned with the brand’s moniker and wall-to-wall Tango-tastic carpets. The bold locale is practical too though, hosting scarf tying workshops and breathing new life into old Hermès scarves by dip-dying them in one of five brilliant hues.
The week ended with Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful taking to the stage at the Oxford Union with fashion designer Marc Jacobs, discussing everything from the importance of diversity to the fantasy of fashion. The November issue of Vogue – fronted by The Crown star Claire Foy and hailing the return of Glamour – landed on newsstands too.
In celebrity news, Victoria’s Secret made headlines by announcing its first collaboration with a fashion house. Balmain‘s Olivier Rousteing will create custom looks for the annual catwalk spectacular, and a capsule collection to launch in stores on November 29.
Penelope Cruz revealed how she learnt to embody Donatella Versace ahead of the 2018 release of The Assassination of Gianni Versace, and Kelela dropped her debut album, Take Me Apart.
Standout style moments came from Solange Knowles in fresh-off-the-catwalk Helmut Lang seen by Shayne Oliver, and Carey Mulligan got Guccified at the BFI London Film Festival.
Frieze Art Fair launched in London with a set of star-studded events, drawing the fashion crowd as it recovered from the spring/summer 2018 shows. Vogue‘s Olivia Marks highlights the female artists to look out for at Frieze and it also earns a spot on the new and improved weekly feature: Vogue Recommends which gathers the play to see, the film to watch, the food to try and the exhibition worth travelling for each week.
