MICHAEL Phelps will race against a great white shark on television later this year in a bizarre bid to defeat the ocean’s greatest predator.

Discovery Channel bosses announced that the 31-year-old would feature in this year’s season-opening episode of their annual Shark Week programming schedule.

Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White will pit Phelps’ 23 Olympic gold medals against millions of years of natural evolution in a race that has sent the internet into meltdown.

Details on how the battle will take place are unclear – but viewers are already excited.

“Honestly, I’m more excited for Michael Phelps racing a great white shark than I am for the Mayweather/McGregor fight. Just me though,” said one fan.

Another wrote: “How stoned was Michael Phelps when he decided it was a good idea to race a great white shark?”

“If Michael Phelps beats a shark, I’ll put his career and legacy over anybody’s,” a third said.

Despite the hype, Phelps is likely to be thrashed during a flat-out race with the ancient predator.

In 2010, Phelps’ speed underwater peaked at around 6mph – compared to the great white shark’s considerable 25mph top speed.

But that minor detail is not expected to dissuade millions from tuning in when the episode airs next month.

“We just got off a plane from South Africa yesterday, we were down there for about a week,” Phelps said earlier this week.

“That one was fun, doing some stuff with Shark Week and for me, sharks are like my number one favourite animal in the world, being able to see them face-to-face was pretty cool.”
