Lorde and Taylor Swift have never been shy about hiding their love of one another. Firm friends for three years, the musical pair often share insights into their relationship and post sneak peeks into their BFF life. However, recent comments made by Lorde in an interview with The Guardian have come under criticism.
Speaking about what it’s like to be friends with someone with that level of fame, the 20-year-old compared it to “having a friend with very specific allergies”. To place these comments in context, she explained that it’s due to the fact that there “are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do.”
While these comments unsettled some fans, the following were the ones that cause the most concern. “There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship,” she continued. “It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.”
Unsurprisingly, fans of Taylor and Lorde alike quickly took to Twitter to respond and swiftly brought into conversation the fact that Selena Gomez – another close friend of Taylor’s – does suffer with an autoimmune condition, Lupus.
While it’s clear that what Lorde has said here was not meant with malicious intent or to offend those with similar conditions. The musician, whose second album was released over the weekend, quickly took to Twitter to apologise accordingly.
While Taylor has decided to stay quiet on the matter, this unfortunate incident highlights the benefits of social platforms like Twitter. They offer the opportunity for those in the public eye to explain their actions and – if necessary – apologise.
