Chris Cornell’s Death Spurs Twitter to ‘Protect’ Eddie Vedder, Last Remaining Grunge Icon

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder is trending on Twitter, but don’t worry, he’s still alive — and his fans are rallying to keep him that way.

In wake of the sudden death of Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, who was found dead in his Detroit hotel room Wednesday night after what will now be engraved in history as his final show, people who enjoyed the early ’90s era of rock ‘n’ roll are calling to “protect” Vedder, the last remaining mainstream grunge icon.

Other losses to the genre over the years have included Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, Alice in Chains lead vocalist Layne Staley and, more recently, Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland. Andy Wood, considered one of the founding fathers of the Seattle grunge scene that birthed all of these bands, died in 1990 from a heroin overdose.
